FAQ — Singl

Quick answers to the questions that come up most.

How does Singl decide which task to show?

Singl uses weighted-random selection from all tasks that are currently due (not hidden by a Show After date). Each task's priority maps to a frequency multiplier: 1 → 10×, 2 → 5×, 3 → 3×, 4 → 2×, 5 → 1×. A priority-1 task is picked ten times as often as a priority-5 task. Within the same priority, selection is random. Once a task is picked it is pinned on screen until you explicitly skip or complete it — reopening the app always returns you to the same task.

What do the priority numbers mean?

Priority 1 is the highest — those tasks appear most often. The exact multipliers are: 1 = 10×, 2 = 5×, 3 = 3×, 4 = 2×, 5 = 1×. Use priority 1 for things that must happen today, 3 for normal work, and 5 for low-urgency someday items.

Does skipping a task affect how often it appears?

No. Skipping a task (swipe, shake, or the Skip button) does not mark it complete or change its weight. It stays in the pool with the same priority weighting and can appear again on the very next pick. The Skip button guarantees you will see a different task — unless only one task is due, in which case Skip is disabled.

Can I go back to the task I just skipped?

Yes. The Back button (← arrow, shown in the toolbar alongside the Skip button) returns you to the previous task. It steps back through your skip history for the current session. If you have not skipped anything yet, or the previous task is no longer due, the Back button is disabled.

What happens after I complete a one-time task?

It is marked complete and removed from the active pool immediately. It stays visible in Settings → Tasks for seven days, then is auto-deleted to keep the list tidy.

What happens after I complete a recurring task?

Singl calculates the next due date based on the recurrence interval, hides the task until then, and reschedules the notification. The task disappears from the active pool until that time arrives, then re-enters. You never need to re-create or manually reset a recurring task.

What is Show After?

Show After is a date and time you set on a task to hide it until a specific moment. The task is excluded from the weighted-random pool until that time passes. Use it to schedule something for Monday morning, defer a task until after a meeting, or hide anything that is not relevant right now. Once the time passes, the task re-enters the pool and a notification fires.

Nothing is showing — what is wrong?

Either all your tasks have Show After dates in the future, or you have no tasks yet. Open Settings → Tasks to see every task including hidden ones. Any task with a future Show After date will show that date next to it.

How do I complete a task?

Double-tap the task card — you will feel a haptic and see a checkmark animation. You can also tap the circle button below the card. From the Home Screen widget, tap the ○ button. From Siri or Shortcuts, use the "Complete Current Task" action. If you have cleared every task that is currently due, Singl shows a fireworks burst to celebrate.

How do I skip to a different task?

Three ways: swipe the card left or right past about 80 pt and release (it flies off and the next slides in), shake the phone (the card tumbles down and the next springs up), or tap the Skip button (↺) in the toolbar for a 3D card-flip animation. All three move to the next task without marking anything complete.

Can I add notes to a task?

Yes. The Notes field in the task edit form accepts any text and is shown below the title on the main card and in the medium Home Screen widget. Notes are optional — leave the field blank and nothing extra appears on the card.

Can I attach a photo to a task?

Yes. In the task edit form, tap the camera button to take a photo or the photos button to pick one from your library. The image is stored on-device and displayed as a full-screen viewer when you tap the card. The photo is not shown in the widget, but the widget displays a small indicator when a task has an attached image.

How do I edit a task?

Open Settings (gear icon, top right) and go to the Tasks tab. Tap any task in the list to edit its title, notes, recurrence, priority, Show After date, or photo. If a recurring task is showing as complete before its next due date, tap Reset Completion in the edit form to make it due again immediately.

What does the Home Screen widget do?

The small widget shows the current task title and recurrence badge. The medium widget adds the notes field and two action buttons: → skips to the next due task, ○ marks the current task complete — both without opening the app. Lock Screen widgets (inline, circular, rectangular) keep the current task visible at a glance even when your phone is locked. To add a widget, long-press your Home Screen, tap +, and search for Singl.

Why is the widget not updating?

iOS controls when widgets refresh in the background and can throttle updates when battery or background activity is limited. Opening the app briefly forces an immediate sync. If the widget consistently shows outdated information, check that Background App Refresh is enabled for Singl in iOS Settings.

Does Singl send notifications?

Yes. Singl schedules a notification for each due task — recurring tasks get a notification when they next become due, and one-time tasks with a Show After date get a notification at that time. Notifications are rescheduled automatically whenever you complete a task or change your list.

Where can I see my completion history?

Open Settings → Tasks → History to see a log of everything you have completed, grouped by date.

What card styles are available?

Four, selectable in Settings → Options → Style: Card — a rounded rectangle with drop shadow and border; Note — a yellow sticky note with a page-curl effect; Paper — a torn-edge page with ruled lines and a red margin; Plain — no background frame, just the text. Switch any time without affecting your tasks.

How does Reminders import work?

Go to Settings → Tasks → Import from Reminders. Toggle Enable import on, grant Reminders access when prompted, choose which list to sync, then tap Sync now. Running sync again is safe — it updates existing imported tasks rather than creating duplicates. Future due dates from Reminders carry over as Show After times. Completing a task in Singl does not mark it done in Reminders. Singl never touches tasks you created directly — only tasks it originally imported. Sync is on-demand; there is no automatic background sync.

Reminders import is not finding my lists — what should I check?

Singl needs Full Access to Reminders. Go to iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Reminders and make sure Singl is set to Full Access. If the permission was previously denied, you need to grant it there before the import will work.

What Siri and Shortcuts actions are available?

Two: Add Task creates a new task by voice — Siri will ask for a title; notes and recurrence are optional. Complete Current Task marks whatever is currently showing as complete, without unlocking your phone. Both appear in the Shortcuts app and respond to custom Siri phrases you set there.

Can I turn off the animations?

Yes. In Settings → Options you can independently toggle the completion checkmark animation and the fireworks burst. The card-press haptic always plays. The swipe and shake animations are the primary navigation mechanic and cannot be disabled separately.

What is the daily reset time?

In Settings → Options → Daily Tasks you can set a time for when day-based recurrence intervals roll over. It defaults to midnight. Adjust it if you prefer your "new day" to start at a different time — for example, 6 am if you want daily tasks to reset when your morning begins.

Does Singl sync across devices?

Not currently. Tasks are stored locally on the device. The Home Screen widget reads the same local store, so it always matches what is in the app on the same device. There is no iCloud sync or cross-device sharing at this time.
